October 2024 Update

Due to the design process taking longer than anticipated, a request for proposal for construction of the project was issued in October. Originally that had been planned for August.

With this in mind, it is now expected that construction will begin in January 2025, provided an acceptable proposal is received for the contract.

Closed for safety, Hopkins Landing is now slated for renovation. A public engagement process took place in April through May, 2024. Construction is anticipated to begin in January 2025.

This is your space to learn about the project as it gets underway.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has launched a community-wide effort to revamp the beloved Hopkins Landing dock.

The trusty old dock had to be closed to public access in June 2023 after a structural assessment found it was unsafe for public use. Following a report to the SCRD Board, staff received budget to move forward with the dock renovation project.

An engineering consultant has now been secured and it’s time to hear from our community and users of the dock. What would you like to see done as part of the renovation process to improve your experience of Hopkins Landing?

Lots of information about the project and ways to share your ideas and memories can be found at letstalk.scrd.ca/Hopkins.

You can also join SCRD staff and the local contractor working on this project for an open house between 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on May 1 at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

If you are unable to attend, you can also join the online portion of the open house which will commence with a presentation at 6 p.m.

Information on how to join the open house virtually will be provided on the Lets Talk Hopkins Landing page and the SCRD website prior to the open house taking place.

In 2022, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) engaged a contractor to carry out a structural inspection of the Hopkins Landing dock. The contractor’s report from April 2023 found that the dock was no longer in serviceable condition.

Staff took immediate action by installing signage at the dock informing the public that they can use the dock at their own risk and that public gatherings were not permitted on the dock.

At the June 15, 2023 Electoral Area Services Committee meeting, following a staff report, the SCRD put forward a recommendation to temporarily close the Hopkins Landing dock until a number of repairs can be completed in order to make the dock safe for use. This recommendation will be voted on at the June 22 Board meeting.

A link to the Electoral Area Services Committee meeting staff report can be found here.

“The main repairs will be known once a contractor is procured and assessments and permits are obtained,” says Shelley Gagnon, General Manager of Community Services. “We understand that the dock closure is an inconvenience, and would like to thank users of the dock in advance for their ongoing understanding and patience as this vital infrastructure is repaired.”
