What organizations are involved in this project?

Sunshine Coast Regional District, District of Sechelt, Town of Gibsons and Islands Trust are working together to deliver this project

How does the public benefit from this project?

Better understanding current and future flood hazards will help our communities to consider climate adaptation pathways to address them.  Flood mapping also helps inform the region's land use planning changes to support community resilience.

What is the current project focus?

We have been gathering information and working with mapping technicians, water hydrology experts, engineers and geomorphologists, and reviewing the latest scientific understanding of rising sea levels, to create maps highlighting specific areas of concern, and to understand future changes in high tide and storm surge patterns.

Following that, we are reviewing existing policy and considering recommendations of how to improve and align land use planning and policies.

What is the purpose of the Community Outreach in 2024 and 2025?

Community and stakeholder engagement and awareness building is a critical component of climate adaptation and coastal flood mapping.  Project outreach will seek to better understand community concerns and help build awareness and understanding of coastal flood hazards.  Getting public accounts of past flood events are useful for flood mapping.  Engagement increases awareness of coastal flood hazards and climate adaptation pathways to address them.

When will public engagement opportunities begin?

Our King Tide photo contest was held from November to January 2025 to raise awareness of the project. Photos are available here. More engagement and opportunities for public response are now available through Pop-Up outreach booths at local events and online May 15 to 29. See the main page for links to dates and locations.

How can I stay connected and get involved?

You can follow this page to hear about project updates directly.  Public engagement sessions are schedule for May 15th  and 21st (both in person) as well as 29th (online) to help you to participate. A website poll goes live late April until June 10 and information from that will be shared back in summarized form later in June. You can help us identify areas of concern, feedback and solutions on the map.
