The Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) has initiated the process to update the region’s Solid Waste Management Plan. This Plan will describe how the SCRD will manage garbage, recycling, green waste, and food waste programs for the next 10 years.

What is the Solid Waste Management Plan?

This plan will guide solid waste management services, providing direction for programs, services, infrastructure and policies. These plans are updated every 10 years to ensure they reflect changing community needs.

A big part of developing the Plan is providing opportunities to hear from the community on their priorities and how they think solid waste services should be delivered on the Sunshine Coast.

The SCRD works with The Town of Gibsons, District of Sechelt, shíshálh Nation Government District to address all aspects of solid waste management. Each community has unique solid waste services provided to meet their needs.

What is the goal?

The goal of the Plan is simple: create less waste! Using the 2022 Waste Composition Study as a baseline, the updated Plan will create objectives and strategies to lower the overall production of garbage on the Coast and increase the amount of diverted items such as recycling and organics away from the landfill.

The SCRD currently produces 421 kg of waste per person each year. The provincial target is 350 kg. We are close, but still have room to improve.

How does this impact me?

We only have one landfill, and it is almost full -- we need to decide what to do next: What is important to you? What services do you use? What services would you like to see? We want to hear your questions, provide suggestions and answer feedback forms to help guide the plan.
