May 2026 Project Updates

The 2025 WRIP projects have been very hard at work and proving that sustainability doesn't have to be a waste of time.

Cedar Grove Elementary

The Green Team is on a mission! They’ve been teaching their classmates how to recycle and compost like pros, finding contamination in the bins, and helping the whole school shrink what ends up in the landfill. They even rolled up their sleeves for a waste audit and shared their findings with the P.A.C. — including ideas on how to level up diversion. Talk about environmental superheroes. Go Green Team Go!

Fruit Tree Project - brought to you by One Straw Society

The team has been busy developing and planning their pilot project. Their goals include reducing waste, tackling food insecurity and saving wildlife from being habituated.

Do you have a fruit tree? Do you want to pick fruit? Fruit Tree will connect everyone to keep food out of the landfill.

Gibsons Community Building Society - Gibsons Public Market

Waste receptacles were replaced at the Gibsons Public Market and already they've seen a decrease in how much waste is going to garbage. How much? From 15 to 53% of their waste! Check out what they're doing at instagram.com/gibsonspublicmarket and make sure you use the right bin!

xwesam Roberts Creek Community Association - Zero Waste Events

The xRCCA is focused on strengthening and expanding zero waste practices at major community events hosted in the creek.

You probably already used their zero waste station at Earth Day and you can help make a difference by using the station at other events like Creek Daze, future Earth Days, Eek the Creek Family Halloween Party, Community Christmas Potluck, and Photos with Santa.

At this year's Earth Day 750 residents and visitors helped by active volunteers diverted 40 kg of waste from landfill - making it a truly zero waste event as nothing went to landfill.
