2025 WRIP Project Reports

This year's projects successfully diverted waste from the landfill by helping to make it easier to recycle and educating the community. See below for highlights from this year's projects.

Cedar Grove Elementary

The Green Team helped raise awareness about waste sorting through student-driven activities, teaching their classmates, and presenting to the Parent Advisory Council (PAC).

One challenge they faced was helping students who don't sort waste at home learn how to recycle and compost properly at school. The Green Team taught their peers how to recycle and compost while also identifying contamination in waste bins. Their efforts helped divert food waste and recyclables from the landfill.

The team also made a lasting impact by encouraging food vendors to switch to more recyclable packaging.

Over the course of the school year, the 12 Green Team members and their teacher connected with more than 300 community members. They look forward to building on this success next year by welcoming new members and continuing to make a positive impact on their school community.

Fruit Share Project - brought to you by One Straw Society

The team is still working through their pilot project and we will share their results in September! Their goal is to “We match extra fruit and community pickers, getting fresh food to the bellies that need it.”

Do you have a fruit tree? Do you want to pick fruit? Fruit Tree will connect everyone to keep food out of the landfill.

Gibsons Community Building Society - Gibsons Public Market

The Gibsons Public Market successfully implemented a comprehensive four-stream waste sorting system on both floors of the facility using WRIP funding. The project included the purchase and installation of standardized waste stations for garbage, recycling, organics, and refundable containers, along with clear educational signage to help visitors sort materials correctly.

The system was installed throughout public areas and supported with staff education and ongoing monitoring to encourage proper use. They received a very positive response from visitors, tenants and community members.

Based on reporting from their waste hauler 553 kilograms of food waste and 1891 kilograms of recycling were diverted from going to the landfill. This was through all their events from January 1 to May 30th and included over 53,000 visitors and participating from the over 15 vendors and 25 staff and volunteers.

They have plans to build on their success by looking at mobile stations that would be better suited for events like the night market.

Check out what they're doing at instagram.com/gibsonspublicmarket and make sure you use the right bin!

xwesam Roberts Creek Community Association - Zero Waste Events

The xRCCA is focused on strengthening and expanding zero waste practices at major community events hosted in the creek. They completed their project back in May. See below for how the closed the circle on waste and had no waste sent to the landfill on Earth Day.

You probably already used their zero waste station at Earth Day and you can help make a difference by using the station at other events like Creek Daze, future Earth Days, Eek the Creek Family Halloween Party, Community Christmas Potluck, and Photos with Santa.

At this year's Earth Day 750 residents and visitors helped by active volunteers diverted 40 kg of waste from landfill - making it a truly zero waste event as nothing went to landfill. How did they make this happen? Increased accessibility and clarity of waste sorting. The addition of a dedicated second set of bins significantly improved the visibility of the recycling station, making it easier for attendees to recycle.
