In late 2024 and early 2025, the Sunshine Coast Regional District (SCRD) drilled five test wells as part of ongoing work to identify new groundwater sources that could help supplement the regional water system.

Of the five sites, the test well located at the Sechelt / shíshálh Hospital emerged as the most promising, with the potential to provide more than 22 litres per second of groundwater.

In May 2025, the SCRD Board directed staff to move forward with next steps at the hospital well field site, including additional monitoring of the aquifer and water quality.

As part of the 2026 SCRD financial planning process, additional budget was approved for the drilling of two larger size wells. Once drilled later in 2026, these will be tested to confirm if they would be able to produce 75 liters per second without impacting the aquifer or result in any water quality concerns.
