About this project

The SCRD has initiated another phase of groundwater investigations to explore the feasibility of supplementing the Chapman Water System with additional groundwater supply to address the current water supply deficit and create regional water system resiliency. This investigation focuses on the Sechelt area, with five identified sites where test wells will be drilled. The SCRD received support from the shíshálh Nation for drilling of the test wells on the selected sites and drilling is projected to start in August. If results of test wells are favourable, and the required funding is secured, the next phase would be applications for license (s), design, engineering and permitting of production wells in the chosen location(s).

Groundwater Investigation - Phase 5

Selection of Test Well Drilling Sites

The SCRD and Kalwij Water Dynamics Inc. (KWD) assessed several sites and have narrowed the focus to five (5) potential test well drilling sites. These potential sites are based on KWD’s analysis and engineering, anticipated production potential, and SCRD staff’s scoring of existing infrastructure locations for piping connection purposes. Key factors considered in site selection were land ownership, proximity to existing water system infrastructure, ground elevation, the Watershed 560 Agreement with the Town of Gibsons, and the SCRD’s preference to develop a well near the Sechelt area.

Test Well Drilling Site Locations and Drilling Sequence

The following locations were recently added to the scope of this project, these wells already exist in the locations below:

Cliff Gilker Park (3110 Sunshine Coast Highway, Roberts Creek)

The test wells in Cliff Gilker Park were developed as part of a project to explore the potential use of groundwater for the irrigation of the sports fields at Cliff Gilker. In 2024, the development of these wells was added to the scope of the groundwater investigation project. The development of these wells will confirm if the productivity is such that there could be excess capacity available to have these wells also function as a community supply well. A 72-hour duration constant rate pumping test of the drilled test wells was completed in August.

Sunshine Coast Arena (5982 Shoal Way, Sechelt)

An inactive well located at the Sunshine Coast Arena (SCA) may provide an opportunity to move the water required for ice operations at SCA off the Chapman Water System. In 2024, the investigation to determine the viability and feasibility of the well adjacent to the SCA as a water source for ice operations was included as part of the groundwater investigation project - Phase 5. The video inspection of this well was completed in August.
