What organizations are involved in this project?

Sunshine Coast Regional District, District of Sechelt, Town of Gibsons and Islands Trust are working together to deliver this project

How does the public benefit from this project?

Better understanding current and future flood hazards will help our communities to consider climate adaptation pathways to address them.  Flood mapping also helps inform the region's land use planning changes to support community resilience.

What is the early project focus in 2024?

The project is gathering information and working with mapping technicians, water hydrology experts, engineers and geomorphologists and the latest scientific understanding of rising sea levels to create draft maps highlighting specific areas of concern, and understand future changes in high tide/ storm surge patterns.

What is the purpose of the Community Outreach?

Community and stakeholder engagement and awareness building is a critical component of climate adaptation and coastal flood mapping.  Project outreach will seek to better understand community concerns and help build awareness and understanding of coastal flood hazards.  Getting public accounts of past flood events are useful for flood mapping.  Engagement increases awareness of coastal flood hazards and climate adaptation pathways to address them.

When will public engagement opportunities begin?

We anticipate to start broader public engagement from October to December 2024 to raise awareness of the project. More engagement and opportunities for more public response to the draft Mapping data and Recommendations will occur in April-May 2025

How can I stay connected and get involved?

You can follow this page to hear about project updates directly.  Public engagement sessions will be announced to help you to participate.  This website will also post links, polls and information.  You can help us identify areas of concern and positive solutions on the map.
