Updates to Zoning on the Sunshine Coast
Consultation has concluded
One of the Sunshine Coast Regional District’s (SCRD) current zoning bylaws - Bylaw 310 was adopted over 30 years ago. The Sunshine Coast has since grown and changed significantly, and many of the Bylaw’s regulations have become outdated and unsuitable for current conditions. An update is needed to ensure the Bylaw aligns with renewed community goals as well as provincial and federal legislations.
Initial Changes
The new Zoning Bylaw 722 incorporates initial updates and provides opportunities to address urgent community needs that have emerged in recent years. These include:
Secondary suites permitted. Bigger auxiliary dwelling units such as carriage house or garden cottage: size increased from 592 ft2 (55 m2) to 969 ft2 (90 m2)
Climate change adaptation. Support for energy efficient buildings, green roofs, solar panels and wind turbines.
A mini-farm in your backyard. Beekeeping and chickens permitted, along with your own farm stand in some areas.
Support for home-based businesses, a growing trend, particularly through COVID.
